People looking for a safe way to get rid of old financial records and other confidential paperwork will have two opportunities this month during free community document shredding events in Reno and Carson City.

The events are scheduled for Saturday, July 11, in Reno and Saturday, July 18, in Carson City, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Residents can securely dispose of outdated personal documents, including bank statements, tax records, credit card offers and other sensitive materials to help protect against identity theft and fraud.

The events are open to the public and will be held at the Sierra Nevada REALTORS office at 10509 Professional Circle in Reno and the organization's Carson City office at 300 S. Curry St.

Instead of charging per-box shredding fees, organizers are encouraging attendees to make a voluntary donation to the Sierra Nevada REALTORS Foundation. The foundation provides grants to local nonprofit organizations and scholarships for Northern Nevada students.

"Sierra Nevada REALTORS is committed to strengthening the communities we serve, and Document Destruction Day is one way we can provide a valuable service while giving back," said Garrett Lepire, 2026 president of Sierra Nevada REALTORS. "These events help residents safely protect their personal information, and the donations collected support local students and nonprofit organizations making a meaningful difference throughout Northern Nevada."

The foundation awards $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at 24 Northern Nevada high schools who are pursuing higher education through universities, community colleges, trade schools, and technical programs. In 2025, the foundation awarded $23,000 in scholarships.
