For Nevada families struggling with high energy bills or aging home equipment, help with the cost of making those upgrades could soon be within reach. Google announced a $10 million investment Tuesday aimed at making homes more energy-efficient and affordable.
Half of the money, $5 million, will go to the Nevada Clean Energy Fund’s Residential Energy Upgrade Program, which provides financing for improvements such as efficient heating and cooling systems and weatherization. Google said the remaining $5 million will be distributed later this year, with more details to come.
The funding is intended to address a gap for households that may face financial barriers to home upgrades but do not qualify for existing assistance programs. Other households have health and safety issues in their homes that can make them ineligible for available programs.
Google said the investment will support new weatherization and energy efficiency improvements in the Reno-Sparks area near its Storey County facility and in Clark County near its Henderson facility.
The company said similar Energy Impact Fund efforts in other states have helped households save between $545 and $729 a year on energy bills. The Nevada program is expected to provide upgrades at no cost to Nevada residents.
“This investment will help more Nevada families make improvements that can lower their monthly energy bills, while creating healthier, safer and more comfortable homes,” said Kirsten Stasio, CEO of Nevada Clean Energy Fund. “By reducing the upfront barriers that often prevent households from pursuing these upgrades, we can ensure more Nevadans benefit from the state’s growing clean energy economy.”
Google said the investment builds on its presence in Nevada, including its Henderson data center built in 2019 and its Storey County facility built in 2021. The company said it has invested more than $6 billion in Nevada during that time.
“We’re committed to being a good neighbor and ensuring our presence directly benefits Nevadans. That means not only powering our operations responsibly, but also investing in practical solutions that can make an immediate, meaningful difference for local families,” said Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Energy & Power at Google. “Through this partnership with the Nevada Clean Energy Fund, we are helping put critical home upgrades within reach for more households, lowering energy costs, improving health and safety, and ensuring more communities share in the benefits of Google's long-standing commitment to Nevada.”
Additional details about the Nevada Clean Energy Fund funding, including eligibility and how to apply, are available through the Residential Energy Upgrade Program.
