Sparks Fire receives grant for a green waste dumpster program for wildfire prevention

The Sparks Fire Department has received a $29,000 grant from the Nevada Fire Chiefs Association (NFCA) to begin a Green Waste Dumpster program aimed at reducing wildfire risk.

The program is part of the 2025, 2026 NFCA Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and will support the placement of eight green waste dumpsters throughout the city starting today.

Each dumpster includes educational banners and QR codes that link to information about wildfire prevention and defensible space practices.

Waste Management is providing the dumpsters at a discounted rate for use during summer and fall, and again in spring 2026.

The program is free for City of Sparks residents and accepts only green yard waste and debris such as leaves, branches, and grass clippings.

Items not permitted include dirt, rock, sod, palm fronds, blackberry, poison oak, stumps, scotch brooms, furniture, appliances, hazardous chemicals, and construction materials.

Anyone caught dumping prohibited items may be held responsible for extra costs.

More information about dumpster locations, defensible space, and wildfire prevention is available at cityofsparks.us/greenwaste or by scanning the QR codes on the dumpsters.
