The sleighs are full again at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), and the next couple of weeks are shaping up to be some of the busiest of the year.
Airport officials say Christmas and New Year travel is expected to mirror last year’s strong holiday season, with several days bringing far more people through the terminal than usual.
The busiest days are projected to be December 19, 22, 26, and 29, along with January 2, when about 14,000 to 15,000 total passengers are expected each day.
That surge is well above an average day at the airport, and travelers are being urged to plan to avoid last-minute stress.
Getting to the terminal at least two hours before boarding time is recommended to allow for parking, check-in, TSA screening, and heavier crowds.
Parking is also expected to be tight. Travelers are encouraged to check real-time parking availability before arriving or reserve a spot in advance through the airport website. Surface lots and garage parking are likely to fill up, which could prompt some drivers to park in overflow areas.
For those catching a ride, Uber and Lyft riders can take $10 off trips to the airport by using the discount code RNOFall25 through December 31.
Security officers may need to inspect gifts, so airport officials suggest skipping wrapping before flying and using gift bags or wrapping after clearing screening instead.
Drivers should also be aware of ongoing construction along the airport Loop Road. Projects tied to the MoreRNO Infrastructure Program include the Central Utility Plant, the Police and Airport Authority Headquarters, and the Ground Transportation Center, with signage posted and reduced speeds in some areas.
To add a little calm to the holiday rush, the airport’s Paws 4 Passengers therapy dog teams will be on site December 20, 22 to 24, 27, and 29, offering quick visits to help travelers of all ages relax before takeoff.
