I-80 west traffic is being turned around at the Nevada state line and Donner Lake due to multiple crashes.
Caltrans says there's no current estimate on when the interstate will reopen to cars.
Chains are required on all car except 4-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Donner Lake to 3.4 mi east of Gold Run.
Several mountain highways may have chain controls. Check Caltrans' website or NDOT for the latest information.
Tuesday will be partly cloudy and roads will improve once the sun comes up to help melt the leftovers.
Snow totals will range from 1-2 feet in the high Sierra, 4-12 inches at lake level, and a few inches in the foothills.
