Oceanic explorer and conservationist Jean-Michel Cousteau is in Lake Tahoe meeting with multiple environmental organizations.
You may recognize the name. He is the son of legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. He's here to advocate in protecting not just the ocean, but all bodies of water, including Tahoe.
"I did not expect to see the number of people living around the lake and some of them now want to make a difference,"Â said Cousteau.
He tells us getting to meet so many people who are passionate about protecting Tahoe makes him feel hopeful.
Different league officials gave educational demonstrations. From identifying invasive species to showing how the BEBOT works.
Jesse Patterson, chief strategy officer for Keep Tahoe Blue, explains, "We don't only clean the sand on top, we clean below the sand with robots that actually filter out micro plastics and other things before they get into the lake."
The Washoe Tribe also showed progress on their Mayála Wà ťa project. Removing lodge pole pine trees that are sucking up all the ground water.
Cale Pete, interim environmental director for Nevada and California Washoe Trib, says, "With the trees gone, hopefully we see culturally significant plants in the meadow. Also, we're also monitoring ground water levels out there through piezometers."
Teenagers and young adults that are part of the Lake Tahoe Ambassador Program are using all this knowledge from the demonstrations to help spread the word.
Hudson Bigley, an ambassador, says, "We just learned about the BEBOT and learned about the area and how to help clean up trash on the beach."
Le'a Gleason, communications engagement director for Sierra Nevada Alliance, says, "It's an educational and networking experience for us to represent what we've done this year, but also continue learning for partners."
Callum Exline, another ambassador, says, "We just try and get the word out and educate as many people as we can and spread the word so everyone can do what we're doing instead of just a handful of people."
Jean-Michael Cousteau is also expected to speak at the University of Nevada's Tahoe Campus as part of the League's 2025 Speaker Series tomorrow.
