As October comes to an end and the temperatures continue to drop, now is a good time to consider getting your home winterized. Those night hours are reaching freezing temperatures, and you wouldn't want that to affect your irrigation system.

According to Corey's Lawn Service, you need to shut and clear out those water pipes otherwise you could be increasing the risk of seriously damaging your irrigation system and cost a lot more money to get it fixed.

"Winterizing your sprinkler system involves just making sure everything's properly shut down and draining out the system to ensure that there's no pressurized water that's still in the pipes to make sure that if we get the low temperatures that things won't crack, freeze, and explode everywhere," said Corey Bettinghouse, the owner of Corey's Lawn Service.

Bettinghouse said that if your system is still on during the winter, water could flood all over your property. He also told us that if you don't shut it down properly, water could get trapped in certain parts of the pipes and cause them to crack.

While the overall winterization process is simple, Corey's Lawn Service recommends having a professional do it if you don't know exactly how to do it yourself.

Truckee Meadows Water Authority says that winterizing your home saves water and money.

"If you have a problem with a frozen pipe it could leak," said Chuck Swegles, a conservation coordinator at Truckee Meadows Water Authority. You're going to be using more water because that water is going to go through your meter and you're going to be billed for it. You want to avoid the leaks and winterization is one step to avoid that."

While right now is a good time to get your home winterized, Corey's Lawn Service recommends that you book a service sooner rather than later since it's a very busy time for them. For more information click here.
