Members of The League to Save Lake Tahoe and volunteers were picking up trash at Kings Beach and the surrounding area today.
Over 60 volunteers went to work to pick up all kinds of garbage that is left on the beach during Labor Day weekend.
One volunteer from Reno says he saw all kinds of trash over the course of a few hours.
"We found anything from as small as bottle caps, beer bottle caps to stuff as big as Barbie dolls and inflatables and t-shirts and clothing. We saw it all, but it is a little bit cleaner than I think it was in previous years," said Nick Magri, a volunteer.
Volunteers were given gear and had the chance to not only cleanup the beach, but also the area around Kings Beach.
Participants kept track of the items they found, and they were able to weigh the amount of trash gathered at the end.
Another volunteer we spoke with says he loves taking part in these cleanups, as Lake Tahoe holds a special place in his heart.
"I try to leave everywhere I go cleaner than I found it, but especially here. This is where I have lived for the last 11 or 12 years so this is my home, and I like to see to see it clean. I know we are a tourist location, and we are really popular and busy all the time, but someone has to do it," said Sawyer Mahoney, a volunteer.
Overall, volunteers were able to clean up 991 cigarette butts, 323 plastic food wrappers and more, coming out to 231 pounds of trash.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe says this is an improvement from last year and it continues the trend of cleaner beaches this summer.
They hope this continues, because lots of trash can have environmental impacts down the road.
