The investigation continues tonight after officials found a person dead outside of Lois Allen Elementary School. Because of that, all after-school programs on the Sun Valley campus today were canceled.
Washoe County Sheriff's Office and School Police responded to a medical emergency call earlier this morning, just before 9:30.
They say a person was confirmed dead on the outdoor campus of the school.
Sheriff Darin Balaam of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office said, "For the safety of the children, that was a main priority, making sure that there was no outstanding threats. So once ourselves and school police arrived on scene, we identified that there was no outstanding threats, but the school, out of abundance of caution, kept them on a secured campus until the ending of school."
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office will now be taking the lead in the death investigation.
The Washoe County School District mentioned the death earlier today at a board meeting, where they say mental health resources are available to students who may need them.
Washoe County School District Superintendent Joe Ernst said, "School counselors and psychologists and social workers, and other district mental health professionals are on site to provide additional support."
The age and identity of the person, as well as the circumstances of what exactly happened, haven't been released yet.
We will keep you updated as we learn more.
