Share Your Christmas kicks off at 6 a.m. on Friday, December 12th. Our annual drive-by food drive supports many local food banks, including the food pantry at Living Faith Kids Church in Fernley.
Living Faith started in the early 1990s thanks to a local couple.
"Me and my husband pastor a church here in Fernley. When we got married 33 years ago, we had the food pantry," said Regina McCreary, the food bank's director.
Three years after they started, Living Faith partnered with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and they've been a part of Share Your Christmas ever since. Now, McCreary said their 38 volunteers help serve about 700 people in multiple rural communities.
"We serve Fernley, Wadsworth, Nixon, Sutcliffe, Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Yerington, and Fallon," she said.
Living Faith will accept any food donations, so long as they're unopened and in date. They're especially looking for canned proteins like beef stew and soup.
"We serve 80 homebound people," McCreary said, "and they really like the soups and stuff."
The pantry offers drive-thru food pickup. McCreary says they used to let people walk in and fill their own boxes before the COVID-19 pandemic, but now they stick with curbside pickup since it's easier for both volunteers and those in need.
McCreary says she's happy to give back to rural Nevada.
"It's a blessing to see people having their needs met and [be] so thankful," she said.
