Police arrested a man who's now charged with the unlawful use of a whip in downtown Reno.

He was also charged with obstructing and resisting an officer, as well as possessing drug paraphernalia.

You may remember - the Reno City Countil passed an ordinance in 2021 making the use of a whip in downtown Reno without a permit illegal.

Citywide, whip use is only prohibited if the whip is used to injure, annoy, interfere with or endanger.

The issue of whip use in Reno at the time gained national attention for the "weird whip problem" as the New York Magazine deemed it.

Despite the media attention, Reno is no the only—or first—city to put such an ordinance in place. The Reno ordinance is actually modeled after a 2018 Hawaii law.
