Washoe County deputies helped rescue a hiker and his dog lost near Lassen National Park last weekend.Â
The Lassen County Sheriff's Office requested Washoe County's help after the experienced hiker lost his way back to his base camp.Â
Authorities say he had called his wife earlier in the day but could no longer use his cell phone due to a dying battery.Â
Due to rugged terrain and some wilderness restrictions, Lassen County requested aerial support to speed up the search. By this point, deputies say the man had been missing more than 24 hours when Washoe County's RAVEN helicopter was requested.Â
After sunrise the next morning, a helicopter found the man and dog less than 90 minutes of searching. But, the aircraft could not land because of dense brush and windy weather so crew members dropped food, water and a written message to the man.Â
Ground crews with Lassen County were then dispatched to the location where they found the man a few hours with his dog and was later safely removed from the backcountry.Â
"The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office commends the skill, professionalism, and teamwork demonstrated by the RAVEN Unit, our Incident Management Team, and our partners in Lassen County that lead to the safe recovery of the subject and his dog," the sheriff's office says in a statement.Â
They also want to remind everyone that if you or someone you are with becomes injured or lost in the wilderness, call 911 immediately. Search and Rescue services are always free, and early notifications help them respond faster and safer.
