A popular off-highway vehicle destination west of Winnemucca Ranch Road is expected to draw large crowds over Memorial Day weekend, prompting the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to remind visitors to recreate responsibly and help keep the area safe.
The Moon Rocks OHV Area remains a well-known spot for OHV riding and camping. Over the years, deputies have responded to numerous calls for service there, including OHV crashes, serious injuries, fatalities, and fireworks-related incidents. Officials say the goal throughout the holiday weekend is safety, making sure everyone can enjoy the outdoors responsibly and return home safely.
Deputies and BLM Rangers will be actively patrolling the area throughout the weekend. They are encouraging visitors to make responsible decisions, follow safety regulations, and remain respectful of others using the recreation area.
Before heading out, officials are reminding visitors of several safety rules. People are urged never to drive impaired, and open containers are prohibited in both cars and OHVs.
Fireworks are not allowed. Campfires should be used responsibly, with all active fire restrictions followed. Shooting is prohibited in most areas.
Visitors are also reminded to watch for OHV riders of all ages and abilities, ride within their skill level, and be alert to others sharing the area. They are also encouraged to help keep the area clean by packing out trash and debris.
Officials also took time to recognize the holiday’s meaning, remembering the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country.
As the weekend approaches, officials are asking everyone to do their part to stay safe, look out for one another, and enjoy the holiday responsibly.
