With summer recreation season getting underway, most U.S. Forest Service recreation sites around Lake Tahoe are now open or opening this week as visitors return to beaches, campgrounds, trailheads and other popular destinations.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, recreation sites must be cleaned after snowmelt before opening each year. Crews also remove safety hazards such as dead or damaged trees and wait until the danger of freezing temperatures has passed before activating restroom water systems.
The agency said opening dates remain subject to change based on weather and area conditions.
Among interpretive sites, Inspiration Point and the Tallac Historic Site opened in late May, while the Taylor Creek Visitor Center is scheduled to open June 5. An opening date for Logan Shoals Vista Point has not been determined.
Many campgrounds, resorts and recreation facilities are already open, including Zephyr Cove Stables, Camp Richardson Corral, Round Hill Pines Resort, Meeks Bay Resort and Campgrounds, Camp Richardson Resort's Eagle's Nest and Badger's Den campgrounds, Blackwood Canyon, Fallen Leaf, Kaspian, Nevada Beach and William Kent campgrounds, Angora Lakes Resort and Echo Chalet.
Camp Richardson Resort and RV Park and Zephyr Cove Campground & Resort remain open year-round. Opening dates for Luther Pass Campground and Watson Lake Campground have not yet been announced.
Several beaches, picnic areas and trailheads also opened throughout May, including the Sandpit Off-Highway Vehicle Area, Sawmill Pond Picnic Area, Mt. Tallac Trailhead, Baldwin, Nevada and Pope beaches, Bayview and Big Meadow trailheads, Eagle Falls Picnic Area & Trailhead, and Kiva Picnic Area.
Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor have also reopened with expanded parking lots. Paid parking at both sites took effect June 1.
The Forest Service reminded visitors that until recreation sites are fully open, parking, trash service and restrooms may not be available. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and pack out all trash.
The agency also noted that national forest gate and road opening dates are determined by Motor Vehicle Use Maps and remain subject to change. Visitors should park legally, avoid parking on vegetation, and not block gates where closures remain in place.
Pets are not permitted at designated swim beaches at Baldwin, Camp Richardson, Meeks Bay, Nevada, Pope, William Kent and Zephyr Cove under public health and safety regulations. In developed recreation sites, pets must remain on a 6-foot leash, and owners are asked to properly dispose of pet waste.
