National Dog Day is celebrated each year on August 26. According to the holiday's official National Dog Day website, it was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert, animal rescue advocate, author, and dog trainer.
The date has a personal connection for Paige. According to the National Dog Day website, her family adopted her first dog, Sheltie, from a local animal shelter on August 26, when Paige was 10 years old.
The celebration is about more than the dogs people know as pets. National Dog Day recognizes dogs of all kinds, including mixed-breed and purebred dogs, while also highlighting the many ways dogs help people. That includes dogs involved in law enforcement, search and rescue, and other forms of service, according to the National Dog Day website.
For some people, that might mean celebrating the dog waiting at home. For others, it might bring back memories of a childhood pet or a favorite dog who belonged to a friend or family member.
And for anyone who has ever been greeted by an excited dog, stopped to pet one on a walk, or found themselves smiling at a funny dog video, there's still a reason to join in.
