After a snowstorm blew over Lake Tahoe, we wanted to take a closer look at how drivers should start preparing to drive in winter conditions, especially since NDOT put chain controls in the area Monday night through Tuesday morning.

As we approach the cooler months NDOT wants to remind everyone to make sure they prepare themselves and their vehicles for winter driving conditions.

"That means making sure that your car has appropriate tires, making sure that all your vehicle fuel levels are topped off, making sure that you have chains and an emergency snow kit in your vehicle as well," said Meg Ragonese, public information officer for NDOT.

Ragonese says last winter there were 3,500 crashes during inclement weather such as ice, rain, and snow.

She says it's very important to drive slowly during rough weather conditions and make sure to leave extra space in between you and other vehicles.

NDOT begins preparations for highway maintenance throughout the summer so that they're ready for the winter.

"We stockpile over 30,000 cubic yards of salt and sand to place on winter roads for improved traction," said Ragonese. "And as we prepare for highway maintenance, we want drivers to also prepare for winter highway driving."
