Drivers who travel on US 395 to the North Valleys should expect to see some changes in construction this week.
Beginning on Thursday, December 19 an additional northbound US 395 lane and on-ramp will open as construction in NDOT's widening of the highway in the North Valley's project begins to progress.
The northbound US 395 lanes between Oddie Boulevard and the Parr/Dandini Boulevard interchange will be expanded from two lanes to three lanes, adding an additional one and a half miles of additional lanes through the work zones.
The North McCarran Boulevard to the northbound US 395 on-ramp reopened today, now that the three lanes allow enough room for drivers to safely merge onto the highway. NDOT says intermittent closures of the on-ramp may reoccur as construction progresses.
NDOT says that traffic patterns will continue to change as construction progresses and drivers should drive attentively, follow work zone speed limits, and stay in their lane through the work zones.
According to NDOT drivers will continue to see the following lane and speed reductions through the work zones:
24/7 Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions
- Northbound U.S. 395 remains reduced to two lanes 24/7 from just north of Dandini/Parr Boulevard to Golden Valley Road as sections of highway and bridges are removed and reconstructed, retaining walls built, and other improvements made.
- Highway lanes are slightly reduced in width and shifted.
- Speeds are reduced to 55mph 24/7 through the work zone.
Lane and Ramp Closures
- Additional overnight lane closures continue, with highway lanes reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction:
- Northbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 8 p.m. and 11 a.m.
- Southbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Intermittent ramp closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday evenings through Saturday mornings. Detour routes will be marked.
- Virginia Street on-ramp to southbound U.S. 395 in Panther Valley remains closed.
- The construction schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change.
NDOT says with major construction scheduled to take place through early 2026, they encourage drivers to sign up for the following traffic alerts:
- Text “NorthValleys” to 866-540-8466 to sign up for construction text alerts.
- Contact the project hotline at (775) 636-4202.
- Visit 395NorthValleys.com for project information and updates.
NDOT says the project will make the following improvements to enhance traffic mobility and safety on the heavily traveled corridor:
- Add lane to southbound U.S. 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. This new lane will be constructed in the median of the southbound freeway.
- Construct additional merge (auxiliary) lanes between each freeway ramp in both directions of U.S. 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
- Construct a “braided” freeway ramp along northbound U.S. 395 between the Panther Valley on-ramp and Golden Valley Road for safer, smoother traffic flow, similar to southbound I-580 ramps at Mill and Second Streets.
- Repave both directions of U.S. 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
- Construction of five new sound walls, retaining walls, and aesthetic elements highlighting the gateway to the City of Reno and roadside ground treatments such as native plantings and rock.
- Add paved shoulders of up to 12 feet to provide room for enhanced incident management and roadside response.
