Nevada Guard, State Archives co-host celebration of U.S. Army's 250th birthday, Flag Day June 14

The Nevada National Guard and the Nevada State Archives will co-host the 27th annual Flag Day Ceremony and a celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday on Saturday, June 14.

The ceremony to commemorate the U.S. Flag and celebration to recognize the Army's 250th birthday will take place at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds, located at 101 N. Carson Street, in Carson City, at 10 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

It will include a historical flag presentation by the Nevada Air Guard and remarks from Brig. Gen. D. Rodger Waters, Nevada Adjutant General.

The Nevada State Archives will open its latest exhibit, “All For Our Country,” which highlights Nevadans who served in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II.

Items on display are on loan from the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, the Nevada Historical Society, the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum, and the Westwall Militaria antique store.

The U.S. Army was established by a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, with the authorization of 10 companies of riflemen.

Two years later, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act and adopted the stars-and-stripes design for the national flag.

In 1949, President Harry Truman signed an act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day.
