Right now, it’s the "paw-fect" time to give a big dog a "fur-ever" home.

The Nevada Humane Society (NHS) is waiving adoption fees for large dogs at its shelters.

Jerleen Bryant, CEO for the Nevada Humane Society, said that means "free adoptions for any large breed dog over 50 pounds that has been here two weeks or more."

It’s part of the Lucky in Love program sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. The NHS is one of several shelters across the nation taking part.

Bryant said big dogs take longer to get adopted for many reasons, including housing restrictions.

“Oftentimes it's hard for people to rent or find housing with a larger breed dog,” she said. “So, we tend to see them staying longer in our shelters."

If you’re stopping by for a big dog, Bryant said there are two big things to consider: how much time you have, and how energetic the dog is.

Big dogs, like Saunder (above), are free to adopt at Nevada Humane Society until Tuesday.

“If it is a very high-energy dog and maybe you don't have as much time or you're not as active of a person, maybe that isn't the best match," Bryant said.

But if you're looking for a pooch to relax with, the shelter has plenty of them, too. Some don't like other dogs, and others have specific dietary needs, but the shelter can help you find exactly who you're looking for.

“We love to be able to answer any questions that anyone has about the animals in our care, and we're always going to give the most information that we can,” Bryant said.

You can stop by the NHS at its Reno and Carson City locations for free big dog adoptions until this Tuesday, March 17th. Both locations are open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
