Palisades Tahoe add diesel 600E snowcat to fleet

Palisades Tahoe has introduced the PistenBully 600E+, the world’s only diesel-electric snowcat, as part of its fleet this winter.

The addition marks a major step toward sustainable mountain operations by offering greater power, efficiency, and environmental responsibility than traditional grooming machines.

The 600E+ is designed to be more powerful, quieter, and up to 20% lower in emissions than other cars in its class. The snowcat’s diesel engine operates at an optimal speed while working in tandem with an electric drive train to reduce fuel use. During downhill runs, the electric motors generate power, easing strain on the engine and improving efficiency.

In terms of performance, the 600E+ delivers up to 16% more thrust and instant torque, allowing it to move more snow while consuming less energy. Its longer chassis improves climbing ability and enables it to cover more ground than any other PistenBully model available in North America.

The machine is also equipped with SnowSat LiDAR, a snow depth measurement and fleet management system that provides real-time data up to 165 feet around the car.

This allows operators to place snow precisely where needed, leading to fewer passes, lower fuel use, and longer-lasting slopes.

All snowcats in the resort’s fleet will now run on 100% renewable diesel this season, made from fully renewable raw materials. The resort reports that the fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60%, and up to 75%, compared to fossil diesel.

Additionally, the PistenBully 600E+ includes a park push frame that allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in shaping trails and lift ramps.

“We’re always looking for ways to operate more efficiently and reduce our environmental footprint,” said Sydney Earley, Director of Health, Safety & Sustainability. “The PistenBully 600E+ helps us do both, combining cutting-edge technology with responsible mountain operations.”

The arrival of the PistenBully 600E+ highlights Palisades Tahoe’s continued focus on innovation and sustainability, reinforcing its goal of maintaining world-class skiing while protecting the surrounding environment.
