The third annual Purple Heart Honor and Recognition Dinner took place Sunday night at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino in Reno.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the military who are wounded or killed while serving.

According to a rep with Nevadans 4 Vets, 53 Purple Heart veterans were honored on Sunday night.

"A lot of the Purple Heart holders don't talk about it. They might wear a pin on their chest, they might wear a hat," says Kelsey Kibbe, the Secretary and Purple Heart Chair of Nevadans 4 Vets, "But there's no story on how they received it, how it happened."

The event included a cake honoring, where the youngest and oldest Purple Heart recipients cut a cake together.

Tonight's dinner was presented by Nevadans 4 Vets and Reno Purple Heart Chapter 719.
