The Reno Fire Department has added a new K9 to help support first responders.
Lambeau, named for the Green Bay Packers home stadium, is a one-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Retriever who will serve as a facility dog offering peer support for first responders. He is the first facility K9 in northern Nevada specifically dedicated to supporting firefighters and other first responders.Â
Lambeau was born in Mamaroneck, New York and underwent training at Assistance Dogs of the West in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He started his training at just eight weeks old and was matched with his handler, Reno Fire Inspector Katie Nelson, a few months ago.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and we look forward to the positive impact K9 Lambeau will have on our crews by offering comfort when they need it most,” said Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran. “The Reno Fire Department is proud to welcome Lambeau to our family.”Â
On a typical day, the City says K9 Lambeau wakes up bright and early and heads to Reno City Hall to kick off his workday. He attends planning meetings with the Fire Prevention team and travels to fire stations to support crews.
He also makes sure to discuss important matters with his retired friend, K9 Boston.
