Current and retired Reno firefighters are getting into the holiday spirit by assembling and delivering holiday food baskets to families in need.
On Saturday, firefighters will be distributing these baskets to families selected through referrals from community-based organizations and agencies, according to officials.
Officials say this program is dedicated to Jana Maas, a retired firefighter with the Reno Fire Department (RFD), who recently passed away unexpectedly.
Maas put in countless hours to the program every year and also ensured that every basket brought joy and dignity to the people who needed it, officials also say.
“We are proud to honor Jana’s legacy this year, as she took great care to ensure our department honored Sam Saibini,” said Reno Fire Chief David Cochran. “This one is for Jana, and as firefighters, we’re always in the business of giving back. Being able to help families who may need extra support during this time of year is important to us.”
This tradition began over 90 years ago, in 1932, when Sam Saibini, a late RFD Firefighter, asked captains at each Reno fire station to help provide Christmas dinners for families that needed support during the holidays.
Officials say the program has grown over the years because of funding from RFD members, local businesses, and community members.
