Reno police are remembering a retired K9 whose work helped remove thousands of pounds of illegal drugs and contraband from circulation, but those who knew Niko say his impact went well beyond the job. The beloved police dog died on Oct. 23, leaving behind a legacy of service and a special bond with the people he worked alongside.
According to the Reno Police Department in an online post, Niko served for eight years, beginning his career in October 2014. During that time, he worked with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including the DEA, FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Department of Homeland Security, and Amtrak Police, as well as specialized units within the Reno Police Department.
Niko's work helped make the community safer by locating thousands of pounds of illegal narcotics and contraband.
But away from the job, Niko had a softer side. Police said he loved meeting new people and was always happy to give extra kisses in exchange for a good belly rub.
Niko retired from service on Jan. 13, 2022, and spent his remaining years at home with Officer White and his family. The department thanked White and his family for giving Niko a loving home, exceptional care, and the chance to enjoy retirement.
The department also highlighted the special connection between a K9 and its handler, saying Niko's legacy will live on through the people he touched and the difference he made during his career.
Niko's end of watch was Oct. 23, 2026.
“Thank you for your service, Niko. You may be off duty, but you will never be forgotten. Rest easy, good boy.”
