Sierra Nevada REALTOR is hosting its annual free Document Destruction Days this Saturday in Reno and the following Saturday in Carson City.
The event , offers residents an opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive personal records while supporting local education initiatives.
On Saturday, July 12, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sierra Nevada REALTORS office in Reno, located at 5650 Riggins Court.
The following week, on Saturday, July 19, the event will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the organization's Carson City office at 300 S. Curry Street.
Document Destruction Days aim to help residents securely shred old documents such as bank statements, tax records, and credit card offers.
Organizers say responsible disposal can help reduce the risk of identity theft and fraud.
While the shredding service is free, monetary donations are accepted in lieu of box fees.
All proceeds will benefit the Sierra Nevada REALTORS Foundation, which provides grants to nonprofits and scholarships to local high school students.
The foundation says its key initiative, the Alyce McCracken Memorial Award, offers $1,000 scholarships to students from 24 high schools in Northern Nevada. These awards support children continuing their education at four-year universities, two-year colleges, or accredited trade and technical schools.
Last year, the foundation awarded $23,000 in scholarships to local graduates.
"We're excited to offer a day of community enjoyment, while also building a stronger future for our local students through impactful scholarships, thanks to the incredible support of our generous event supporters,” LaBrie said.
More information about the foundation can be found at the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada's website.
