The Sparks Police Department is addressing increased traffic congestion along Sparks Boulevard and Vista Boulevard.

Officers say unsafe driving behavior is worsening delays and putting public safety at risk.

In recent weeks, police have seen a rise in car crashes, reckless driving, and road rage incidents, especially near the on- and off-ramps to I-80.

According to the Sparks Police Department, many issues stem from impatient drivers attempting to bypass gridlock.

One common violation involves drivers cutting through private or public properties, like parking lots or neighborhood streets, to avoid traffic signals.

Police say this practice, while tempting, violates Nevada law. Under NRS 484B.400(2), it is illegal to leave a roadway to avoid a traffic-control device.

Drivers also often proceed into intersections without ensuring the road ahead is clear, even during green lights.

Police say this behavior clogs intersections, disrupts cross traffic, and is a violation of NRS 484B.250, which requires drivers to yield until it is safe to enter.

“Blocking intersections puts all drivers at risk and worsens delays for everyone,” the department stated.

Sparks Police are urging the public to drive responsibly and avoid shortcuts that can increase delays or create hazards. Drivers are encouraged to stay on main roads and allow extra time during peak hours.

“The privilege of driving comes with the responsibility of ensuring safety, patience, and adherence to the rules of the road,” police said.

The department issued a list of reminders for drivers:

  • Do not use private property to avoid traffic signals.
  • Yield properly before entering intersections, even with a green light.
  • Avoid aggressive driving or road rage, which can result in criminal charges.
  • Plan for delays and follow posted traffic laws during rush hours.

Sparks Police say they will continue monitoring traffic and may begin issuing citations to drivers who violate these laws. Their goal, they said, is to improve safety and traffic flow in the area as the city continues to grow.
