Residents in the Damonte Ranch area are going to have to prepare for some construction on Steamboat Parkway.

Reno city leaders say they're expanding lanes after area residents expressed concerns about traffic.

"We see multiple crashes out here at this intersection and talk with fire station 12 that they come out here and deal with a lot of turn and angled crashes all the time so we're going to improve that safety," said Dale Keller, Director of Engineering for RTC.

"I don't know if anybody here has ever gone from Damonte Ranch Parkway, tried to turn onto Steamboat, but everybody has to shift left very quickly," said Naomi Duerr, Vice Mayor of City of Reno.

Starting on Damonte Ranch Parkway, construction will add another turning lane to match the three lanes on Steamboat Parkway making turning more efficient for drivers.

They will also be widening Steamboat from four lanes to six lanes starting at Marketplace Drive to Veterans Parkway.

"And then when you're trying to exit Steamboat Parkway the idea is that you should be able to go across, continue on Steamboat Parkway so that there isn't just one lane where people have to travel, but two lanes to go straight and better turning movements to right or left," said Duerr.

Construction is expected to last about six months.

"We're asking the public to practice their patience, go a little bit slower as you enter our work zones, be courteous to our construction workers, and you'll get through a much smoother and quick ride to home," said Keller.

Keller is also recommending leaving home for work a little earlier, so you don't have to rush.
