After an investigation spanning multiple states, a Utah man has been arrested and charged with murder in Lyon County.

39-year-old Robert Matthew Richards of Saratoga Springs, Utah has been identified as a suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Sara Filiatraut, according to a release from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office has been investigating the disappearance of Filiatraut since April 15th of this year. They discovered her remains in a remote area of Churchill County on May 22.

An autopsy determined her cause of death as a homicide.

The suspect, Richards, was working and staying in the Fernley area when Filiatraut went missing and left Nevada a short time later according to the Sheriff's Office.

When Filiatraut's remains were found detectives learned that Richards was staying and working in Colorado.

Detectives went to Colorado and with the assistance of the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant and collected several pieces of evidence. That evidence led to an arrest warrant being issued for Richards.

That warrant charged him with one count of first-degree murder.

On July 29th Richards was arrested in Utah in an operation including Lyon County Sheriff's Office detectives as well as local law enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Richards was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail in Salt Lake City where he will remain until he is extradited to Lyon County to face trial for the murder of Sara Filiatraut.
