Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) is reminding residents and businesses to follow smart watering practices as temperatures rise, including assigned-day sprinkler use to help preserve the region’s water supply.

TMWA’s assigned-day watering schedule is based on the last number of a street address.

Addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) should water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) should water on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

No sprinkler watering is allowed on Mondays, which TMWA designates as a rest day for its water delivery system.

TMWA recommends watering late at night or early in the morning when temperatures are lower.

Sprinkler use is not permitted between noon and 6 p.m. to avoid evaporation.

Residents are also asked to turn off sprinklers when it is raining or windy.

To prevent runoff, TMWA advises shortening sprinkler cycles by two-minute increments until runoff stops.

If areas of the lawn remain dry, another cycle can be added.

"Water in the Truckee Meadows is a precious resource. By watering responsibly, you’re helping ensure a plentiful water supply year after year," TMWA stated.

The assigned-day policy applies only to sprinkler systems. Residents may hand water or use drip systems at any time and on any day.

TMWA says it is committed to promoting wise water use and assisting consumers in avoiding needless waste.

Customers, whether residential or commercial, may be unaware that their sprinkler head is malfunctioning or has a leak.

TMWA says if you observe water being wasted, please contact 775-834-8005 to reach the Conservation Department.

Customers who experience problems with water waste will be contacted and given assistance in fixing the problem.
