With Washoe County schools being back in session starting next week and the weather reaching triple digit temperatures, health officials are advising families to help students be well prepared for the heat.Â
Leslie Allfree with Student Health Services of Washoe County School District says, "Parents can really help their students in this by making sure that as we prepare for these hot days, they're wearing their school appropriate attire, staying cool, making sure they're well hydrated, and have great nutrition. Heading into the school year, make sure that students are wearing their sunscreen and be prepared for the different activities that we have at school."
When students are at school they are running around with friends, playing outside and could even be attending extra curriculars outdoors. As triple digit temperatures are present, Allfree reminds of the danger of heat related illness:
"They might seem lethargic, they might be thirsty, they might be really hot. They might need those ice packs. They might need a way to cool down."
In addition to offering students ways to cool down such as refillable water stations and nutritious meals, they have procedures in place when the weather calls for it to move outdoor activities indoors.
Officials cannot over-stress the importance of keeping kids hydrated before coming to school, as well as dressing appropriately, applying sunscreen, wearing hats and possibly even sunglasses. All of which can play a crucial role in preventing kids from heat-related illness.Â
