Two food drives are happening this Friday to support Nevadans struggling during the government shutdown.

You can donate in both Reno and Carson City from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In Reno, food will be collected at 5310 Kietzke Lane in the grassy area outside Representative Mark Amodei's office. Donations will go to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

In Carson City, at 400 South Carson Street outside the state legislature offices. Donations will go to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center Food Bank.

Organizers say the food drive is also meant to encourage elected officials to support local federal workers.

SNAP benefits will continue to be distributed through October 31, but without resolution of the government shutdown, new benefits and assistance may be halted, placing nearly half a million Nevadans at risk.

State officials estimate the monthly cost of SNAP at around $90 million, and state emergency funds are not designed to carry this cost alone.Â
