Preparing the University's Quad for Commencement

Honoring native communities, the University of Nevada, Reno, will hold its annual Powwow Saturday, August 24.

The Powwow takes place from noon to 6:00 p.m. on the university's quad.

The event follows the University Powwow Pageant which takes place Friday night, and the winners of the pageant will be crowned at the Powwow.

The Powwow is designed to encourage UNR students to bring their families to campus to celebrate their culture and tribal traditions, and also to learn about different resources offered to Indigenous students.

Daphne Emm Hooper, the director of The Office of Indigenous Relations at the University and a member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe, says the event also serves as a welcome-back celebration intended to engage Indigenous students and their families for the new school year.

There will be traditional dancing, food vendors, crafts, competitions, and other activities.

Partners for the event include The Multicultural Center, the Native American Alumni Chapter (NAAC), The Office of Indigenous Relations, the local community and out-of-state supporters.

The event is free of charge and open to students, alumni and the community.
