According to NSP, the crash happened when the Rav4 tried to pass the Freightliner by driving south in the northbound lane.
The Ram attempted to avoid a head-on crash by steering right, but the left side of the Rav4 hit the left side of the Ram. causing it to spin out while the right side of the Rav4 hit the left side of the trailer being pulled by the Freightliner.
The Ram crossed onto the right dirt shoulder of northbound U.S. 50 Alternate before returning to the pavement, crossing the northbound lane while spinning. The front of the Ram struck the left front of the Ford Edge.
The Edge stopped on its wheels after rolling down an embankment. The Ram overturned onto its right side. The Rav4 and the Freightliner both came to a controlled stop on the right side gravel shoulder of southbound U.S. 50 Alternate.
