The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is putting out a warning today to let people know about a scam involving cryptocurrency requests.
The people running the scams call people and claim that money is owed for a warrant, fines or legal fees.
The callers usually try to impersonate Washoe County Sheriff's Office Supervisors or Deputies, and appear to come from (775) 328-3001. They may even recommend that you Google the number to provide legitimacy.
The scammers will tell victims to use cash to buy cryptocurrency to pay any outstanding debts.
Officials want to stress that these calls are fraud - the Washoe County Sheriff's Office will never demand cryptocurrency payments, or use scare tactics to demand payment for any reason.
If you receive such a call, WCSO provides the following tips:
- DO NOT deposit/purchase any cryptocurrency or gift cards.
- Hang up immediately.
- Call WCSO Non-Emergency Dispatch at (775) 785-WCSO (9276) to confirm that the call is a scam.
