Yerington Odor Investigation

On Friday evening, the community in the East Yerington area reported the smell of a strong odor with reported air quality concerns.

An odor causing concerns in Yerington has been identified.

After an investigation, the odor was determined to be from a sulfur-based agricultural product applied in a nearby field and had spread by low wind speeds to the surrounding local area.

Officials say they initially responded to a commercial delivery truck driver near Spence Lane and East Highway 95A, who was experiencing itchy eyes and a burning sensation in the lungs.

According to officials, immediately after the fire crew responded, the incident was treated as a hazardous materials response. Fire crews then proceeded to identify what caused the odor and shortly determined after doing an investigation.

Officials found the agricultural operator who used the product and reduced potential exposure for other people.

Officials also say nobody was facing life-threatening conditions, and no additional medical calls came in. They also say sulfur-based products can cause irritation, especially for sensitive people.

Community members who experienced symptoms during this incident, such as eye irritation, skin irritation, or respiratory discomfort are urged to consult with a medical professional.

Lyon County Emergency Management is continuing to monitor the situation.
