A Senior Community Center is being built in the Lockwood area in Storey County at 800 Peri Ranch Rd.

But this facility is not just for seniors, it's also going to have an early childhood education center and Canyon GID offices for residents to be able to pay their bills for water and sewage.

Stacey York, the Director of Health and Community Services for Storey County says "It's more of a senior community center trying to bridge the generational gap to involved birth all the way throughout life."

Storey County's population is about 65% senior citizens, but the community is continuing to diversify with the changing environment, with more and more families moving into the area.

York goes on to say, "We need one facility that's going to last years ahead of time and be open to everybody."

For the seniors there will be transportation, homemaking services, light housekeeping, nutrition and education services including meals on wheels congregate dining, a food pantry that's open more than just one day a week and a one stop shop for case management for all ages.

Community members can also use the space for activities like cooking as there will be a full kitchen available. They can rent out for various occasions like birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, bingo and much more.

The funding comes from a community project funding grant administered by the Congressional Grants Division of U.S. Housing and Development including a small grant from the Department of Agriculture.

The project costs a little over $5 million.

It's about 50% funded through grants and 50% funded through the county.

We asked York about the progress so far and she says "The roof is on, a lot of the outside work is done, the underground utilities are completed, so we're just wrapping up all of that stuff so we can get inside and start doing that."

The facility is about 45% complete and expected to be completely done and open by September of 2025.
