After only a handful of triple digit days this summer, confidence is growing of a heat wave with triple digits likely in the Truckee Meadows. Heat Advisories begin for counties just east of Washoe, including Lyon, Pershing, and Churchill on Friday at 12 pm and going through 8 am Sunday.
High pressure expands westward on Friday, and sticks around on Saturday. The ridge weakens a tiny bit on Sunday, but highs will still hover around 100 degrees. The triple digit heat continues into next week, with lows in the 60’s. Our saving grace will be cool temperatures at night, thanks to dry air.
Ten is the most triple digit days Reno has ever seen in a row, and it is possible that could happen again. It’s already happened three times on record. Once in July of 2024, and again in July of 2021, and 2005. We even had a nine day stretch of triple digits in September of 2022. There is a 70% chance of reaching 100 degrees on Friday, an 80% chance on Saturday, and a 60% chance on Sunday. Overall, there is a 50% chance of matching the record for most consecutive triple digit days in a row in Reno.
Reno usually sees several triple digit days during the year itself, in no particular order. The average high for Reno is in the mid 90’s for the end of July. Lows are usually around 60 degrees.
South Tahoe will be hot as well, with highs forecasted to be in the low 90’s for the next five days. The record is six in a row, since 1968 when records began. Northeast Nevada has the best chance of reaching any daily records on Friday. However, if Reno makes it to 103 degrees on Friday, that would be enough to match the daily record as well. The forecasted high is 101. Now is the time to enjoy some ice cream and pool time before the kids go back to school.
