People signing up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for 2027 should expect higher premiums and fewer options. The enrollment period starts Sunday and ends in mid-January. The big changes include expiring financial assistance, rising rates, and stricter enrollment checks. Financial help is now restricted for many groups. Experts predict less coverage and higher prices, with average premiums rising by 13%. Those without subsidies will be affected most. New regulations will limit tax credits for certain immigrants, possibly increasing the uninsured. The Trump administration plans to remove 760,000 enrollees over claims of fraud, and is aiming for $2.2 billion in savings.
House Democratic leaders are placing an early emphasis on healthcare as they discuss their immediate priorities upon the swearing in of a new Congress on Jan. 3. Early votes in the House next year are expected to focus on boosting Medicaid and restoring an enhanced tax subsidy for Affordable Care Act health plans. Democrats are also promising early votes on legislation to stop the war with Iran and to reverse some of President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become the next House speaker and he's promising Democrats will “get out of the gate fast.”
