Rescue teams are searching for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-China border. A catastrophic and deadly torrent of floods and mud swept through several communities on Wednesday following a glacier collapse. The disaster left at least 273 people dead and more than 1,300 missing including foreigners and pilgrims. Hundreds of people across the Himalayan region were displaced. Videos of the tragedy showed the flood swallowing up people as they tried to escape. Drone footage from Nepal on Thursday showed the scale of the destruction.
What to know about Mount Kailash, a sacred site for pilgrims missing after floods in Nepal and Tibet
Mount Kailash, a Himalayan peak in Tibet, is sacred to several religious traditions and draws pilgrims from across the region. Pilgrims traditionally walk around the mountain rather than climb it, completing a roughly 33-mile (53-kilometer) circuit as a religious practice, while nearby Lake Manasarovar is also a site of spiritual purification. Hundreds of foreigners were among those reported missing after catastrophic floods struck the Nepal-China border region, including Indian nationals on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.
