New York launched ambitious goals to cut its long-term greenhouse gas emissions with clarion calls about saving the future. Seven years later, Gov. Kathy Hochul says she wants to delay the law to save consumers money. Hochul is among the Democratic elected officials trying to navigate the collision of the party’s traditional support for clean energy policies with higher prices and the emergence of affordability agendas. Power costs remain a front-burner issue heading toward the November elections. It’s far from a full-scale retreat on green energy goals. But with an eye toward costs, some states are reassessing policies designed to lessen dependence on fossil fuels.
