Lorita Santos cherishes memories of her father as she joins thousands in Manila to honor loved ones on All Saints’ Day. Known as Undas, this tradition brings families together to remember the dead. Santos visits her father’s grave, offering flowers and candles, and shares stories with her family. She teaches her children to continue the tradition. Undas combines Catholic observances with pre-colonial ancestor veneration. Anthropology lecturer Nestor Castro explains that these practices evolved after Spanish colonization. Similar customs exist in Mexico and other Catholic countries. For many, these gatherings strengthen family ties and preserve cherished memories.
