road work

National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 15-19.

NDOT, Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol and RTC of Washoe County are asking people to drive safely in work zones.

There are many work zones throughout northern Nevada currently, including a section of US-395 in the North Valleys, Pyramid Highway, US-395 through downtown Gardnerville.

There are also projects such as the Oddie/Wells Project, the Steamboat Parkway Improvement Project, North Virginia Street University Rehabilitation, and South Virginia Street Safety projects.

In these areas, drivers will see work zone signage, reduced speed limits, temporary rumble strips and safety barriers, electronic radars, overhead lighting, and more. These features are meant to enhance visibility and increase safety of work zones.

Fines in work zones are doubled while workers are present.

NDOT shared some tips for how to stay safe in work zones:

  • Give yourself extra time in case of delays by planning ahead.
  • Always slow down to the posted work zone speed limit, and don't speed back up until you see signs saying it is safe to do so.
  • Obey construction signs and flaggers.
  • Keep a safe distance from other cars, traffic barriers, construction equipment and workers.
  • Watch for lane or ramp closures and be prepared to follow any detours.
  • Always pay attention to work zone signs, even in areas of long-term road work.
  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or while tired or distracted.
