An avalanche in the Lamoille Canyon area of the Ruby Mountains in eastern Nevada has claimed the life of one man.
The incident happened on December 28, around 11:45 a.m.
30-year old Devon Barton from Battle Mountain was in the area riding a motorized "Timbersled" snow bike with his family near the Dollar Lakes when the avalanche trapped him under snow.
Riders in the area heard a loud noise consistent with the start of an avalanche, then saw a large slab of snow begin to slide down the mountain according to reports from the Elko County Sheriff's Office.
Minutes later, the riders realized Barton was missing. Using avalanche locator beacons, they attempted to find Barton.
It's estimated that Barton was buried under around 2 feet of snow for approximately 10 minutes.
He was then located by his family via the locator beacon - they were able to uncover him and begin life-saving measures while they used a GPS to contact emergency responders.
The Elko County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue responded, but were hindered slightly by weather conditions.
Family members were able to transport Barton to a nearby road, where they were able to meet up with the first responders. Barton was then transported to the hospital.
Barton was pronounced dead at the hospital.
