People in one Reno neighborhood are breathing a sigh of relief after an hours-long police standoff at Regency Park apartments along Lakeside Drive, Monday.

According to Reno Police, they received multiple calls from the apartment complex at Lakeside Drive and Berrum Lane around 10:00 am.

The standoff ended with tear gas being shot into an apartment unit before the suspect was taken to the hospital.

Hailey Best lives next door to the suspect and didn't know what was going on as she woke up to loud bangs.

"I thought it was construction,” Best said.

Soon, she realized it was her neighbor throwing furniture and appliances outside the window.

Best provided a video that showed the man throwing a large flat screen TV and one object that narrowly missed a man.

“I saw appliances being thrown. I saw all kinds of stuff being thrown. It was really sad. I was really scared for any of the passersby,” Best added.

Police say several people felt threatened by what they thought to be a firearm.

RPD identified the man as Brian Earle.

"It was really scary. Not only for passersby but for him as well. I could just tell that he wasn't there [mentally],” Best said.

The police activity forced a precautionary code yellow lockdown of Anderson Elementary.

"I received an email telling me there's a lockdown,” said Munda Elias, a parent of a child who attends Anderson Elementary.

Parents like Gabrielle Lopez rushed to the school, walking through a sea of heavily armed officers.

"We just see a whole bunch of these cops,” Lopez’s daughter, Gretchen told 2 News.

“We tried to go get the kids just now and we had to go all the way around,” Gabrielle Lopez described her ordeal.

Moments later, police began shooting tear gas into Earle's apartment.

After five hours of negotiations, SWAT officers took the man into custody.

The man was wheeled away into an ambulance.

Several people living there say they have had an ongoing problem with the man

"This has been going on for days now. He's been throwing stuff out his window, cursing at people, calling people names [and]  talking to himself,” Best said.

It's unclear if police found any weapon.

Investigators say Earle was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

They also believe the man suffers from some kind of illness.
