The group 'Advocates to End Domestic Violence' have been planning to build a new domestic violence shelter in Carson City for over 30 years. And now with support from the community and help from outside resources construction has finally finished.

The Pennington Foundation stepped in to help by covering half of the funding for the building. The group says without this help it would have taken them another five to seven years to come up with the money.

Lisa Lee, the Executive Director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence talks about the shelter: "It was needed, and it’s been supported all the years that we’ve had a shelter, emergency shelter and transitional housing. And the desire was to have something that was more focused - to have something that was built to be a shelter and to be able to accommodate the security needs of the clients that we serve.”

Lee says the previous location they were at, they were renting the space.

The facility they've built and now get to call their own has 40 beds, and once the facility opens officially they expect the be at full capacity.

Lee says, "We will be able to house you and provide all the necessary items you’ll need while you’re in shelter. And we do a lot of case management from parenting classes, to budgeting classes, to helping you get all the resources that are available."

Patrick Beauchamp, the co-owner of SB Builders says their company was proud to be a part of the construction: "It makes me feel good to be a part of it. Anytime I'm talking to someone and they mention AEDV, it feels good to know that we’ve been there helping them, helping her grow her organization, and help her reaching her dreams of building this shelter."

Lee tells us in Carson they had a lot of support for their cause over the years.

Lee explains, "We have highs and lows, but we’ve designed it to try and be more family-friendly so you would have your own units and be able to keep your family unit together while you’re with us."
