One person is dead, and one was hospitalized with major injuries after a crash involving two motorcycles on Monday.

According to California Highway Patrol, around 5 p.m. on Monday, two motorcyclists were riding in opposite directions on State Route 88 near Red Lake.

50-year-old Marcus Canizales, from Hayward, California, was riding a Harley-Davidson traveling west, and 52-year-old Christopher Jost, from Gardnerville, Nevada, was riding a BMW motorcycle traveling east.

According to witnesses, the Harley-Davidson made an unsafe pass across the double yellow lines and crashed head-on into the BMW motorcycle.

Both riders were ejected from their motorcycles.

Canizales, despite wearing a helmet, received major head trauma and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jost, who was also wearing a helmet, received major injuries and was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital.
