Winter pile burns in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks begin on Monday.

Firefighters will be burning piles of vegetation until March 15th.

Officials say the burns promote healthier conditions for giant sequoias and other tree types.

Pile burns also give protection for buildings and visitation areas and help make firefighters' jobs easier by reducing flammable fuels.
