Many who take Interstate 80 to and from USA Parkway and the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center are tired of the traffic.

"The congestion is getting pretty bad," said Joseph Eaton, who lives in Silver Springs. "They need to widen the lanes."

"Crashes, weather, whenever it snows its a parking lot out there," said Thomas Riggins, who works out at USA Parkway.

There are several proposals to solve the issue in the works; the most recent comes from Elon Musk.

According to Fortune, Musk's Boring Company is studying a possible tunnel project out to the Tesla Gigafactory.

The company has several projects in the works in Las Vegas.

2 News Nevada reached out to the company on numerous occasions to ask questions and get further confirmation on the details, but we have not heard back.

We also reached out to the Governor's Office, and we have not heard back.

The only company that sent a direct response was EDAWN, which said it "aggregated funds from participating major employers who requested the study and directed those funds to support the work."

It would not share who was involved.

NDOT shared with us that since it's not one of its projects, it would not comment.

However, it did say, "Any temporary event or permanent utility or infrastructure on state highway rights-of-way require an occupancy permit. NDOT provides permitting for hundreds of temporary and permanent installations every year alongside highways in Nevada..."

"... NDOT has not at this time received a formal permit request for any related infrastructure on state highway right-of-way in this area of I-80."

One local environmental group does not think the tunnel project is good for the area.

"My organization will fight that project at every step of the way, using all the resources available to us," said Olivia Tanager, Executive Director, Sierra Club-Toiyabe Chapter.

"We know that there are other environmental issues associated with even considering the Boring tunnel up here," she continued. "We know that the water table's quite high. They're probably going to have to do some sort of pumping or some sort of water mitigation. We don't trust the Boring Company to do that appropriately. Our river is too precious and feeds everybody in the Truckee Meadows."

Most of those concerns stem from a Nevada OSHA investigation that took place last year.

There were claims that the company did not issue proper equipment and mishandled hazardous chemicals.

Those citations and fines were dropped by the state.

There are other projects that include widening the interstate and possibly building a new road from Spanish Springs.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County is looking into using an existing Union Pacific Railroad on the south side of I-80 to take about 4,000 workers a day.

"They (Union Pacific) take a risk by having our passenger trains on their rail, but at the same time we can make this a win-win scenario, where the win for the employees out there is they have a better time getting to work and the win for Union Pacific is they can also at the same time get more freight traffic, which it helps them improve their bottom line," said James Gee, Director of Public Transit, RTC.

Gee says they are still discussing the final details and are expecting to have something to show in the coming months.

"Any solution would be better than what we got now," Riggins said. "My only concern with the widening of the road is that, in and of itself, is going to be quite chaotic."

Others want whatever projects come this way to have a clear, thought-through direction.

"Just think it out," Eaton said. "Come and drive it. If you're going to plan it, come and drive it. Come and drive it for a week and get the whole perspective of it.  Don't just go on statistics. Don't just go on what people say."

The only project to have anything set in stone is the NDOT widening project.

However, construction isn't expected to start until late 2027.
