Reno broke or tied seven daily records during the month of May this year.
The majority of the records were for heat, but we did tie a daily snow record on May 17th, with a trace of snow falling at the airport.
For three days in a row, Reno was in the 90’s, and 92 degrees was the hottest temperature recorded this past month. Temperatures were above normal between May 5th and May 16th, and we were below average between May 26th and May 30th. Temperatures were close to average on May 16th itself.
Even though it was hot at times, Reno also saw some rain. Not a record-breaking amount overall, but around average. Just over a half inch of rain fell at the airport for the entire month, and we also broke the daily record on May 4th with a quarter of an inch.
This was the 6th warmest May on record, when you look at both the high and low combined. Data goes back 133 years for Reno itself. It was also the 3rd warmest average low on record with a temperature of 49 degrees.
It will be a hot start to the month of June, but it won’t be the hottest week of summer we’ve ever seen. Ninety degrees is possible, but highs will more than likely be in the upper 80’s instead.
