The nine-time world series champion, Oakland Athletics, have officially announced that they are temporarily moving to Sacramento for at least three years as they await their new stadium on the Las Vegas strip.
The A's held a press conference at their new home, Sutter Health Park, in Sacramento this morning. Both the owner of the Athletics and the owner of the Sacramento River Cats shared their excitement about the temporary move.
River Cats owner, Vivek Ranadive, said "We're committed to providing A's players and fans with a world class baseball experience at Sutter Health while also continuing the beloved tradition of minor league baseball and the Sacramento River Cats."
Athletics owner, John Fisher, said "We're looking forward to this being our home until we move on to our stadium in Las Vegas in 2028."
The Athletics plan to share the ballpark with the San Francisco Giants affiliate, the River Cats, for at least three years or until their brand-new stadium in Vegas is ready.
The A's averaged less than 10,000 people at their games last year which is much closer to the capacity of their temporary ballpark.
I spoke with an A's fan from Sacramento, and he was quite excited to hear that his favorite team is moving home, even if it is only temporary.
The A's will play their first game in Sacramento at the beginning of the 2025 season.
